The Injured Athlete

The elite performance group have set a new precedent in the assessment and management of the injured athlete. Having developed their own screening and assessment protocols alongside cutting edge research into chain-reaction biomechanics, the group have a unique outlook on dysfunctional movement patterns and, therefore, injury mechanism.

EPG has a proven track record of success in the treatment and rehabilitation of the chronically injured professional. Their unique 3D Performance Screen allows the identification of patterns and precursors of injury which are not attainable through conventional assessment methods.

By keeping the assessment truly functional and specific to the tri-plane demands of each sport, the process feeds directly into a bespoke correction and optimization strategy which can be integrated seamlessly into the routine of the professional athlete.

What does The Injured Athlete Consultancy involve?

Medical History Analysis: An in-depth look at previous injuries, training regimens, form etc.

Orthopaedic Testing: Body-wide orthopaedic assessment, to gain a global view of joint structure, muscle balance, neural tension etc. (See excerpt from report below)

3D Fundamental Movement Screen: Our unique tri-plane functional screen, analyses chain reaction biomechanics to identify factors predisposing to injury or performance impairment.

3D Sport Specific Screen: Additional screen to focus on functional patterns specific to each sport.

Analysis Report: Outline of the pertinent findings of the screen with relevant measurements and video shots to demonstrate the identified elements.

  • LUMBAR SPINE / TRUNK
  • Decreased lumbar spine side-bending right with dysfunctional Type II mechanics. Reduction is exaggerated during seated flexion.
  • Excessive extension at the lumbo-sacral junction due to reduced hip and upper lumbar extension.
  • Poor dynamic trunk stability due to dysfunctional muscular loading. (Formidable static core stability is contributing to this problem with an excessive isometric ‘locking’ of the trunk).
  • Ineffective loading of the abdominal musculature eccentrically in all 3 planes of motion.

Strategy: Following on from the report the strategy incorporates all the elements required to help the player back to fitness and then return function and performance levels back to and beyond previous levels

  • LUMBAR SPINE / TRUNK
  • FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS
  • None at this time.
  • ACTION
  • Cease all static core stabilisation work
  • Reduce lower lumbar spine articulation
  • Increase sagittal and transverse plane trunk mobility. This should be achieved by:
  • Therapist assisted psoas lengthening
  • Correction of type 1 and type 2 lumbar and thoracic mechanics with emphasis on type 2 with flexion bias.

Follow-up: The elite performance group are available for ongoing support for both the athlete and support staff. EPG offer various levels of consultancy up to and including a full mentorship in which they take responsibility for every facet of the athlete’s performance and long-term development. [The level and nature of the strategy and follow-up are agreed upon at the time of assessment]

The Developing Athlete

The elite performance group have experience within the fields of Strength & Conditioning, Rehabilitation and Professional Sport . The team have used this powerful combination to develop a unique approach to long term athlete development (LTAD).

What does The Developing Athlete Consultancy involve?

The consultancy is a four phase process designed to allow epg to analyze multiple facets of the athlete’s strength & conditioning, rehabilitation, and long term development.

Customization

The depth and content of each phase will be discussed agreed upon prior to commencement of the consultancy service. EPG are able create a bespoke service that will represent the needs of the athlete.

Analysis

Medical History Analysis: An in-depth look at previous injuries, training regimens, form etc

Orthopaedic Testing: Body-wide orthopaedic assessment, to gain a global view of joint structure, muscle balance, neural tension etc.

3D Fundamental Movement Screen: Objective analysis of the athlete’s movement literacy and performance qualities. In the developing athlete foundational requisites of Flexibility, Balance, Co-ordination and Reaction are given priority over the performance requisites of Strength, Speed, Power and Endurance.

Report

The results of the analysis are presented in comprehensive report to the athlete and the support staff: The report contain pertinent findings from the 3D Fundamental Movement Screen with relevant measurements and video shots

  • 4. Right Hip
  • A. Reduced proprioception (poor control especially in the transverse and frontal planes). Resultant excessive knee valgus is potential risk of long term knee overuse conditions
  • B. Decreased external rotation, (poor eccentric control through adductor group).

Strategy

The strategy will outline the steps required for optimal injury prevention, performance enhancement and long term athlete development (LTAD). Specific recommendations will be made in the areas of Strength & Conditioning and Rehabilitation.

  • C. LOWER EXTREMITY
  • Flexibility:
  • Begin intensive stretching program focusing on gastrocnemius, soleus and psoas muscles bilaterally. All stretching should be performed prior to strengthening exercises and be proprioceptively consistent with functional requirements where possible.

Follow up

Re-assessment of the athlete is recommended to ensure the efficacy of strategy implementation. The elite performance group are available for ongoing support for both the athlete and support staff. EPG offer various levels of consultancy up to and including a full mentorship in which they take responsibility for every facet of the athlete’s performance and long-term development. [The level and nature of the follow-up can be customised to suit the needs of the individual athletes]

The Pro-active Athlete

To succeed in elite sport every athlete desires 2 things:

  • To perform to their peak potential
  • To remain free of injury

The elite performance group offers a service to proactive athletes to help them get ahead; to help them gain the advantage to take them to the top in their sport and stay there. They have developed specific screening techniques and protocols based around the analysis of cutting edge chain-reaction biomechanics. By using this to identify and correct areas of dysfunction, the EPG are perfectly placed to help the proactive athlete achieve their optimum performance as well as significantly decrease their risk of injury.

What does The Proactive Team Consultancy involve?

The consultancy is a four phase process designed to allow epg to analyze multiple facets of the
team’s rehabilitation, strength & conditioning and player development protocols.

Customization

The depth and content of each phase will be discussed and agreed upon prior to commencement of the consultancy service. EPG are able create a bespoke service that will represent the needs of the organization be it Junior Team, Club Academy or Representative Squad.

Analysis

Our unique 3D Fundamental Movement Screen enables us to objectively analyse current athlete movement literacy standards and performance qualities. In the proactive team performance requisites of Strength, Speed, Power and Endurance are emphasized if foundational requisites of Flexibility, Balance, Co-ordination and Reaction are sufficiently developed. In addition further analysis of Rehabilitation, Strength & Conditioning and Player Development protocols is performed by the team.

Report

The results of the analysis are presented in two parts:

  • 1. Individual player reports containing pertinent findings from the 3D Fundamental Move ment Screen. This enables the identification of athletes in need of further testing and specific areas for development in each individual.
  • 2. A Team report outlining the findings in the broader context of current team performance and future potential. Presented as a SWO analysis this will inform the strategy for optimising Rehabilitation, Strength & Conditioning and Player Development protocols.
  • 4. RIGHT HIP
  • A. Reduced proprioception (poor control especially in the transverse and frontal planes). Resultant excessive knee valgus is a potential risk of long term knee overuse conditions.
  • B. Decreased external rotation. (Poor eccentric control through adductor
    group).

Strategy

The strategy phase of the consultancy outlines the steps required to implement optimal injury prevention, performance enhancement and long term athlete development protocols for the team environment. Specific recommendations will be made for the implementation of Rehabilitation and Strength & Conditioning ‘best practice’ along side over reaching strategies for player development.

Follow up

Re-assessment of both individual athletes as well as team protocols are recommended to ensure the efficacy strategy implementation. The elite performance group are available for ongoing support for both the athlete and support staff. EPG offer various levels of consultancy up to and including a full mentorship in which they take responsibility for every facet of the athlete’s performance and long-term development. [The level and nature of the follow-up can be customised to suit the needs of the organisation and individual athletes]
